Vertebral Compression Fractures

Advanced Treatment for Vertebral Compression Fractures

Picture
As our bodies age, our bones can become brittle and prone to fractures. Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are fractures in the vertebrae, the bones that make up the spine.

Kyphosis, the exaggerated forward curving of the spine, is a common visual symptom of a compression fracture.

These fractures can cause severe back pain, limit mobility, and cause height loss. Left untreated, VCFs can cause difficulty breathing, compressed internal organs, and even chronic depression.

Fortunately, there is treatment available for VCFs. One of these treatments is known as vertebral body augmentation.

How it works

Vertebral body augmentation works by injecting bone cement into the fractured vertebral body to expand the vertebrae, stabilize the fracture, and relieve pain.

The procedure itself has a very low complication rate and typically takes one hour per fracture treated. Most patients return home one to two hours after the procedure.

The procedure is covered by most insurance plans including Medicare and involves very little downtime. If you think you are experiencing pain related to a vertebral compression fracture, contact our office today to schedule a full evaluation.
